West Coast Line Redesign—West Coast Line, Simon Fraser University’s literary journal, asked a team of four students(Abi Huynh, Ross Milne, Kirsty Lawson, and myself) to develop for them a new structure for their journal. The publication is read by students, contemporary writers, and others in an academic setting for both study and leisure. After deciding on the format, we designed a modular grid for images. We chose Chaparral Pro for it’s varying weights of body text and optical sizes for captions and headlines. It was then paired with Trade Gothic for title pages. The journal is readable and handsome for setting essays, articles, stories and poetry. A style guide was designed to allow a changing staff of designers to maintain visual continuity from one issue to the next.
