We Are Television—The product of television is its audience. My goal was to design a way for people to experience this, which led me on a research project that taught me the value of working through a problem. A personalized broadcast system was developed, incorporating a camera, video monitor, and power supply that could be worn by a user. After strapping this all on, I walked down a busy Vancouver street on a Saturday night to expose people to their television image. All types of people were captivated by the experience, from club kids to posh middle-aged men. Some became characters and actors – singing, telling jokes, and making fun of their friends. Those who participated voiced to me, and the camera, how much they changed at the mere sight of themselves on a flickering six inch screen. In the end, a dvd of the evening was packaged with a book about the project and its findings, titled We Are Television.
