300 Tang Poems—Designing a multi-lingual (both English and Chinese) book of classical Tang Dynasty poetry, was a throw back to classical design, both for the English and Chinese versions. The poems are organized alphabetically in the running heads, which include the author name and poetic device to keep the reading of the poem from being cluttered up by auxiliary information. The format of the book was chosen after laying out the longest poem to ensure that no poem would have to be carried across two pages. The concept for the cover was to take a symbol of classical Chinese poetry – the hand holding a calligraphy brush – and bring it into a contemporary context to match the methods of today’s printing and reproduction.
